Learning#2--The College Days
So the story continues.
I selected commerce in 11th. Passed out of 12th with good grades.
Now when it came to choosing a college, I was totally at sea. Didn't know what to research. how to research, and didn't even reach out for help from anybody--like anybody!
Chose a college which in itself was pretty good. After all, all schools and colleges are good. It's how you make the best out of it. Some people are able to use the opportunity and really do something with their life, others just wander and do nothing much. Still others like me try to do something with lots and lots of speed but no direction and then just end up quitting!
During my college days, I made lots of wrong decisions--that cost me my time, my money, my peace of mind.
I explored, I did explore a lot, but never reached out for guidance. Took decisions hap-hazzardly!
I joined the CAT coaching classes just after 2 days of passing 12th! I mean that is ridiculous.
Then, I joined college and was taken aback by the diversity. I wanted to be in societies--to be part of something! Was unable to join any society in the 1st year--roamed without direction--enjoyed without purpose--didn't ask for any guidance--didn't reach out!
Then at the end of the first year, I took the DM course from Digital Vidya--which again in itself was good but I didn't know why I was doing it and ended up messing it all---one thing I learnt was blogging! SEO, SMM, etc was way too cloudy and since I didn't experiment I didn't learn!
Then in the second year, I got selected in two societies--marketing and debating. I quit debating after sometime---I am a quitter! Marketing society--I did work for but then only half-heartedly! Was never present in one thing--running from here to there!
I also opted for a Finance course from BSE-- the course was good but then again I wasn't prepared and really didn't want to learn! To put in the hard work! Again didn't reach out for help either.
Here too, I started missing classes--laid-back approach! I was doing two things simultaneously! BSE and CAT! Didn't get any good from either!
Then I dropped a year and studied CAT only! One can imagine my level of laziness! Still got only 88.00 percentile!
Now, when the time to chose a college had come I was again at sea. I applied for almost all the colleges---and wasted a lot of money! A lot! Got selected in a good college, didn't pay, the date went, paid for another course--one that I didn't want and was warned that I wouldn't have any choice in the second year about choosing a course. But because I wanted to do MBA and get a JOB--I chose it!
So, the lesson here is simple!

So, the lesson here is simple!
- Reach Out!--If you are at sea, instead of drowning yourself or failing to rescue yourself, it is best to reach out for help/guidance.
- Take part in societies--any. Be a part of it!---Give your best!
- Study well. Respect your teachers, your peers, your seniors.
- Connect with seniors. Get to know their journey. Ask for guidance from teachers, from seniors, from peers.
- Do internships. Do only full-time internships. It will help you see the CULTURE of a business/company which is the most important thing!
- Societies--in college, NGO--on weekend(better if you join NSS in college, or if society is full on, then NGO on weekend is better--you get to meet people from other colleges), Internships in summer/winter--full time---1 or 2 internships for 1 or 2 or max 3 months is good enough!
- Sit for placements! It is very important to sit for placements. It helps you see where you stand.
- Get placed and start the job! Take a work-ex for 1 or 2 years. If you think that the company is good--continue. If not think of joining other companies. If not think of doing an internship and then PPO.
- Explore all the options before doing an MBA. Think HARD as to why you want to do an MBA.
- Before doing an MBA, read the book Beyond the MBA hype by Sameer Kamat. It will help you see that if you opt for an MBA without any purpose or guidance, you might drown!
- ENJOY COLLEGE LIFE--BUT BE PREPARED TO WORK HARD TOO OR YOUR CAREER MIGHT TAKE A U-TURN!
The most important lesson---RESPECT+INTEGRITY!
Your attitude is the most important factor in life. Good behaviour can take you places. Bad behaviour can kill you!
It is very important, to be honest with yourself and to be honest with others!
Respect everybody and reach out for help because if you don't you might end up making the wrong decision and the virtual cycle will repeat itself! In this age of technology, asking for help seems awkward but better be prepared than sorry!
Hope it helps :)
